You never know when you could have a flooding emergency that will threaten you and your home. It could come from a natural disaster and when you are lucky you might get some advanced warning and need to evacuate your house. Some people never want to evacuate because of the unknown outcome, but so many times you are given no say in the matter.
When Mother Nature decides to make a call, it can be with no warning at all and the immediate safety of you and your family is most important. If you are told to evacuate right away, gather your most essential things as quickly as you can. It is always good to have important documents like insurance papers, property deeds, and birth certificates in one place to be easily accessed in an emergency. Having a survival kit that you can take along might be a good idea too. Have a plan ready for your pets if you have them.
Depending on how much evacuation time you are given, you might be able to protect some of your belongings. If you have a few hours and have an upstairs, you might try to put as many things of value upstairs as you can before you leave. Get your draperies off the floor by using coat hangers. Set your heavy furniture on blocks. Take any small valuables like jewelry with you. Looters are a real possibility in situations like flooding and it might be days or a week or two before you can come back home. If you can do these other things in the home that is good, but making sure you have the necessary supplies for your family is the most urgent task at hand.
If you are given the time you need to pack some clothing for you and your family first. Find out how much baggage you will be allowed to take with you if you are going to have help from officials to be evacuated. If you are going to be able to leave in your own vehicle, take as much as you can because you never know how severe the flooding will be. Take food with you because chances are it will not be any good if your home is badly flooded. Try to know ahead of time where you and your family will go in case of a flooding emergency. Having as many plans as you can already in place before a disastrous event like this happens means the less chaotic it will be.
