Ledged and Brace gates are available in different shapes and sizes. These include; round top pales, flat tops, planed or sawn finish, and pointed tops. The ledge and Brace gates are economical solutions to gateways in many type of fences.
The flat top ledge and Brace gates are tough gates which are screwed together and not nailed .These ledge and brace gates are sealed so as to prevent water damages and penetration behind the board. The redwood is usually the type of wood used in making ledge and Brace gates because it takes stains and absorb water but it needs constant maintenance.
Ledge and brace gates require some measure of expertise when they are being paint. The edges of the doors are first painted with a 1 inch painting brush ,make sure that you cover up the bottom and top edges to protect them again wet rot. The third step is to paint the face of the ledge and Brace gates with a 4 inches paint brush . Paint the rear face of the gate and remember not to overload your brush with too much paint as this will encourage runs on the gate.
Check back over the gate and remove any paint runnings and if runnings are found, paint with an upward stroke. Paint the broad side of the gate and lay off the paint with an upward stroke to complete the painting.

One of the designs that have stood the test of timeboth in functionality and in aesthetic appeal is the Knightsbridge style wooden gate. This design uses two gates of equal size that close shut in the middle, with each side having a post on the inner and the outer edge.
The top of the gate is characteristically curved in a gentle line, with the highest point of the curve near the inner edge where the two gates meet. The main part of each gate is composed of slats that can be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches wide.
Another common type of gate is the church style rounded top’s which as you may have guessed is reminiscent of the gates used in churches all over Europe in the old days. The church style gate is very similar to the Knightsbridge style, but constructed with holes along the top so that anyone who is inside can look through.
Ledge and Brace gates require constant maintenance and constant cleaning. They could get rusty after some period of years if they are not properly maintained, they require new finishing and new coating as well as re painting several years perhaps they should be recoated and repainted every two years otherwise they may get damaged easily with constant stress such as pulling and hitting. They need t6o be constantly managed for long lasting effect.
