Health care emergencies are one of the costliest expenses the family faces today. Emergency health care costs can easily reach over $100,000 for just one family member if they are involved in an accident or catastrophic illness. Without family health care insurance this could easily put most families into economic failure or bankruptcy.

Medical care is one of life’s necessities that everybody needs at some point in time. Young children get sick and often need the services of a health care professional to help prevent a more serious condition. There is also the unexpected automobile accident or school injury which requires medical attention. Without family medical insurance these incidents can easily run up medical bills that the family is unable to pay.

Family health insurance will pay a large portion of any medical fees the family will encounter. Depending on your particular plan, you may only have to pay a co-pay or a small out of pocket deductible before your family health care insurance kicks in to pay the rest of the bill. This allows you to have access to quality medical services without the added worry of affordability.

What Is Covered?

Family health insurance has made some strides in the past years in regards to insurance coverage. Not so many years ago the only thing medical insurance covered was inpatient hospital stays. Routine visits to the doctor’s office for a general check-up or illness had to be paid for entirely by the patient. While these visits usually do not incur the costs of a hospital stay, they can still be costly to a family on a budget. The last several years has seen new and innovative insurance plans that help cover all medical expenses. Some plans such as an HMO require a co-pay but the insurance pays 100% of the bill once the co-pay is paid. These plans usually require you to use one specific doctor for all of your medical care. If you need medical care that is outside your doctor’s realm of experience then you must get a referral from your doctor.

Other plans such as PPO plans give the patient more flexibility but also require the patient to pay a larger portion of the bill. Some PPO plans have a specified co-pay for office visits while others pay a certain percentage after a deductible has been met.

Most family health care insurance plans today also have a prescription benefit which allows the patient to pay a small co-pay for each prescription they have filled. For families that routinely take medication this can be a huge money saver.

It is important to weigh all of your options when you are looking for a family medical care insurance plan. Shopping insurance companies can provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision. There is also a lot of helpful information located on the internet.
